How much does an interstate move cost?
Interstate moves are usually priced by the volume of your belongings (in cubic metres) and the distance, not by the hour.
| What you're paying for | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Studio or 1 bedroom | $1,275–$2,875 |
| 2 bedrooms | $1,600–$4,150 |
| 3 bedrooms | $3,450–$9,200 |
| 4 bedrooms | $4,600–$9,800 |
Based on published Sydney removalist price guides (October 2026), including GST, for moves of around 900 km, such as Sydney to Melbourne or Brisbane. Longer trips, such as to Perth, cost more. A rough guide only.
Dedicated truck or backloading?
-
Dedicated truck
Only your belongings, with set pickup and delivery dates. Faster and more predictable, but it costs more.
-
Backloading
You share truck space with other moves heading the same way. Usually cheaper, but you need to be flexible with dates.
Questions to ask before you book
- How did you work out the volume? And what happens if there's more on the day than estimated?
- What's the delivery window? Get the earliest and latest delivery dates in writing.
- Is transit insurance included? If not, what does it cost and what does it cover?
- Can you store my things if my new place isn't ready yet?
- Are there extra charges for stairs, long walks, or tolls?
Common questions
How far ahead should I book an interstate move?
Four to eight weeks is a good aim, and longer in summer and over the end-of-year holidays, when demand is highest.
What is a cubic metre estimate?
It's the amount of truck space your belongings will take. The more accurate your list of items, the more accurate your quote will be.
Can I get quotes for moving to Western Sydney from interstate?
Yes. Put your current suburb and state in the "Moving from" box, and your Western Sydney suburb in "Moving to".
